Seaweed Skin Benefits

Seaweed is one of the main organisms
Fucus
found in oceans and seas around the world with over 11,000 different species that carry different characteristics. Since there are so many species of Seaweed, I will only be focusing on the most frequently used species used in mainstream organic skin care today such as Fucus, Iridea, Kelp, and Laminaria. Seaweed and Algae is believed to be the oldest form of life on planet due to life beginning in our mineral rich waters of our oceans.
As a skin care professional, I have found seaweed a very efficient way to detoxify and stimulate blood circulation within the epidermis.

Why is seaweed detoxifying and stimulating?
Seaweed is very porous and absorbs which allows them to contain minerals, vitamins and proteins. Since organic and natural compounds have smaller molecular structures they penetrate into our dermal layers a lot quicker than average drug store skin care. Since the molecules are so small, they penetrate deeper letting your skin tingle and some slight redness.  Redness to dermis is a great stimulating way to improve blood circulation helping with many skin conditions such as Rosacea, Acne, and the Aging process.  80% of dry matter in seaweed is minerals that our soaked into the seaweed leaves meaning they are very rich.

What is found in seaweed and what are their benefits? (vitamins, minerals..)
Seaweed contain Algal polyphenols & Carotenoids which are powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants help restore hyaluronic acid (acid that helps our skin retain water for suppleness and elasticity)  into our dermis leaving it feel smooth and supple. Also protecting the skin from cell damage caused from our everyday situations (UV radiation, air pollution..).
Vitamins C & E, beta carotene is found in Seaweed helping to maintain a healthy glow to the skin. Vitamins are essential to your skin cells in order for them to have enough energy to re-generate and have a healthy cell turnover leaving your skin rejuvenated.
Iodine and Iodine-Protein is found in Seaweed and which is essential to the thyroid gland and these proteins help with stabilizing our metabolism. Problemed thyroids can lead to weight gaining, fatigue, immune system sensitivities and hair loss.
Seaweed was long time described as the 'Sailer's Cure' by ancient mariners because seaweed is rich in oils that help with wounds, bruises and swelling due to the anti-inflammatory properties. With these healing properties, seaweed is key to the renewal of damaged skin cells.
Seaweed also contains a large amount of Essential Fatty Acids, which is a part of the lipid layer in our skin that helps with skin elasticity and glow. These fatty acids are essential to our bodily function to the deficiency of skin losing moisture leading to hardening and drying. Therefore, these fats make sure our skin is always glowing and moisturized.

With these skin benefits, Seaweed is a great organic alternative to treat skin conditions and to include for a great maintenance in your skin care regimen. From exfoliation with dry seaweed leaves, to a great masque to treat redness, to a serum and moisturizer to penetrate the dermal layers leaving your skin balanced in moisture level!
